The reaction shown in the diagram uses tetrabutyl ammonium hydrogen sulfate to perform an asymmetric oxidation and cyclization. The chiral auxiliary used was 1,2:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-beta-D-erythro-2,3-hexodiuro-2,6-pyranose. The oxidizing agent was Oxone (TM). The net result was reaction of both carbons of the double bond, one to form a chiral hydroxyl and the other for the ring closure.
