PTC Nucleophilic Aromatic Polymerization at High Temp Using HEG Cl

The scientists at former GE Plastics are the undisputed leaders in using PTC to produce engineering thermoplastics. Polyethersulfones are not only thermally stable and chemically resistant, they are also transparent which makes them particularly suitable for expanded applications. The incorporation of the fluorenyl group apparently increases the glass transition temperature of the polymer.

The nucleophilic aromatic substitution shown is performed at high temperature (185 C). It requires a high temperature phase-transfer catalyst which is this case is HEG Cl (hexaethyl guanidinium chloride).

HEG Cl is supplied by VanDeMark Chemical in large commercial quantities and should be screened for high-temperature PTC applications after determining that it is safe to do so.

Due to the challenging nature of this reaction, it is important to minimize hydration in the system and it was dried to about 10 ppm water prior to adding the HEG Cl catalyst. A high Tg was achieved.
