Ionic liquid onium salts are sometimes used as phase-transfer catalysts. Tributyloctylphosphonium trifluoromethanesulfonate was cited as such a catalyst in the June 2014 PTC Tip of the Month as a liquid at the wall temperature of the thin film distillation unit that facilitated its separation. Normally, this catalyst in the bromide form would be an effective phase-transfer catalyst for I-Reactions since it has 20 carbon atoms, a polarizable phosphorous at the core and a q-value of only 0.89.
